Facebook Metaverse: what it is and how it works.

The metaverse, a concept that seems straight out of science fiction, has dominated headlines in recent months since Facebook announced its name change to Meta and its intention to lead the construction of a virtual reality universe.

It is a massive three-dimensional space where we will be able to interact as we do in the real world in our daily lives.

In the words of Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse will be a set of different virtual spaces where users can create and explore with other people who are not in the same physical space.

«In that future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be in the office without having to travel, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up,» said Zuckerberg, who stated that over the next five years they will transition from being a company that started as a social network to a metaverse company.

To give a practical example, in the metaverse it will be possible to go shopping, chat with other users, attend concerts, and even work.

Without a doubt, it will be a great opportunity for all brands, both consumer goods and technology, to adapt to a space where they will not only increase their authority and brand reputation but will also have great opportunities to gain new segments of emerging markets.

But how will the metaverse work?

This virtual universe will be made up of different interconnected platforms where users can interact using augmented reality glasses, screens, watches, and other gadgets that will emerge over time.

As if that weren’t enough, an example of this is what Facebook—now called Meta—presented in 2021 under the name Horizon Workrooms, a virtual reality platform for remote work designed to be used with the Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality glasses, also developed by Meta. Undoubtedly, this is the first approach to the metaverse.

In addition, the metaverse is also envisioned as a large-scale industrial workspace where all kinds of machines will be tested in order to identify potential failures before building them in the real world.

Ultimately, the metaverse will be a digital replica of the real world, used for various activities, from entertainment to industrial development. A universe made possible by virtual reality.

The metaverse and the near future.

Despite the announcements made by the founder of Meta, the metaverse will be a reality in about ten to fifteen years, according to various experts, including Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Reality Labs.

To begin experiencing this virtual universe, years of development are required to gradually introduce the platforms and devices that will lead to the metaverse as such.

If it is realized, initially the metaverse could represent a business of 700 billion euros by the year 2024, potentially achieving a reach as extensive as that of the Internet.

According to Zuckerberg himself, the great appeal of the metaverse will be to allow users to interact in a way that is as natural and spontaneous as they have in the physical environment.

What we know for sure is that at Iboo we are ready to enter the metaverse. We have experience creating virtual spaces, applications, and digital solutions to facilitate and solve our clients’ problems in an increasingly digitized and interconnected space.

And you, do you dare to take the step into this virtual reality?
